Gardai investigating allegations that schoolgirl was savagely 'raped on trip to the beach'
GARDAí are investigating allegations of the savage rape of a teenage girl who had been enjoying a day in the sunshine.
A man in his 20s has been arrested in relation to the alleged attack near Balbriggan beach in north Co Dublin on Wednesday.
It is understood that the schoolgirl had been enjoying the fine weather with friends.
Local councillor Malachy Quinn said that the incident is "absolutely terrible," and has "left the community in shock".
"The whole neighbourhood is in disbelief," he said. "This kind of thing just doesn't happen here, it's a nice area.
"The area where the alleged attack took place is well lit up but there is a tunnel that leads to the back beach which is dark.
"It's understood to have taken place somewhere around there."
A man was arrested yesterday and was taken to Balbriggan Garda Station, where he is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who may have information, to contact Balbriggan Garda Station on 01 8412202.
Local website Balbriggan Info has issued a community alert warning to women walking in the area.
It posted: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the girl and her family, and we hope she recovers from her ordeal and gets back to some form of normality in the future.
"Please be cautious and if you're out and about with friends, stick together."
