Gardaí are investigating if an assault on a woman is connected to the death of a father and son (3) in a fatal road collision this morning.
Sources have revealed that a mother was stabbed in an assault at her home in Oola, Co Limerick early this morning. Gardaí are investigating if her attack was linked to a domestic dispute.
They have been named locally as Marco Velocci and Jodie Power.
Some time later Marco and their son Alex James Velocci died after their car - a black 2005 registered Audi - was in a collision with a truck at Brook’s Bridge between Pallasgreen and Oola on the Limerick to Tipperary stretch of the N24.
Ms Power was brought to University Hospital in Limerick city where she is being treated for her injuries which are not life-threatening.
A senior source said: "Detectives are investigating the fatal road collision. It possibly has links to an earlier assault at a home in Oola where a woman was assaulted.
"At the moment it is very early days so a full investigation will have to be carried out."
A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed and a post mortem is expected to take place at Limerick University Hospital tomorrow.
The collision occurred at around 8.30am, at Brook's Bridge between Pallasgreen and Oola, Co Limerick.
The man and child in the car were "pronounced dead at the scene", gardai said.
The truck driver was not injured but is being treated for shock, gardai added.
The investigation is being headed up by Inspector Luke Conlon, the Acting Superintendent at Bruff Garda Station.
Inspector Conlon said the road was closed in both directions with diversions in place.
"The road is likely to be closed for a good while, as we are awaiting the arrival of a Forensic Collision Inspector who is based in Cork," Insp Conlon said.
The front of the truck was seriously damaged in the impact.
A Garda source said: "The truck driver is in shock.
"The driver of the car and the young child have unfortunately been pronounced dead at the scene," the source added.
Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the collision.
