Gardai hunt pair after attack on bank worker

A GARDA search was continuing last night for two men who accosted a young bank official outside his home.

The garda helicopter and a large number of uniformed officers were engaged in the search in Co Galway.

But gardai do not believe the incident was an attempted Tiger raid.

The operation was sparked by an ugly confrontation outside a house at Raheen, Athenry shortly after 8.45am.

The 21-year-old bank official was tackled by a man wearing a balaclava and armed with what appeared to be a handgun at the entrance to his driveway.

A second man nearby appeared to have fallen asleep before the confrontation.

The young bank official fought off the man with the balaclava and both men fled the scene on foot.

Gardai were alerted and a series of checkpoints were set up in the area.

A garda spokesman said that the search would continue into the night until the raiders were apprehended.

They have appealed to anyone who may have seen two men acting suspiciously in the Raheen or Athenry area between Thursday night and yesterday morning to come forward in confidence.

One man is described as 5'10", of medium build, brown hair, with blue jeans and a black hoody. The second raider is 5'8", medium build, with black tracksuit bottoms.
