Gardai get more time to quiz murder suspects

GARDAI investigating the gun murder of terrorist Peter Butterly in a car park on Wednesday afternoon have been given an extra day to question four of five suspects arrested by armed officers nearby, write Nicola Donnelly and Tom Brady.

The fifth suspect, a 33-year-old man from Blanchardstown in west Dublin, was released yesterday afternoon. A file will now be prepared for the DPP.

An extension of the detention period for the other four until 2.30pm today was granted yesterday afternoon by Judge William Hamill at Drogheda District Court.

The four men had been arrested on Wednesday at 2.30pm at Flemington Road, Gormanston, Co Meath, on suspicion of being members of an illegal organisation. They were also arrested under Section 15 of the Firearms Act for possession of a firearm.
