Gardai foil arson attack on pub

Gardai believe they foiled an arson attack on a Dublin pub after arresting a suspect nearby early yesterday.

Gardai found that a window of The Big Tree pub on Dorset Street, had been shattered and found a 26-year-old man hiding in the garden of a nearby house carrying a five-litre container, filled with petrol.

Man (51) held over shooting incident

A MAN was last night being questioned in connection with a shooting incident at a house.

The 51-year-old, who is from the Ardfert area in Kerry where the shooting occurred at the weekend, was arrested at 7.30am yesterday. No-one was injured in the incident.

Climate bill threat to food production

NEW climate change legislation is in direct contradiction to government policy on boosting Irish food production and could cost the country €4bn in lost exports, the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has said.

The Climate Change Bill aims to cut greenhouse emissions by 2.5pc a year by 2020. But the IFA said the cuts could not be achieved without slashing the national beef and dairy herd.

2014 delivery for new naval vessel

THE Naval Service will receive the first of two new hi-tech €49m patrol vessels in 2014.

The €98m order for the two new ships -- which are marginally bigger than the existing patrol vessels -- has been placed with a UK yard, Babcock Marine, and the Government insisted that both the terms of the deal and the financing arrangements are highly advantageous for Ireland.
