Gardai brought in over GAA club's missing €100,000

A RURAL GAA club is at the centre of a garda investigation after €100,000 went missing from the organisation.

Gardai are attempting to establish how an estimated €100,000 has vanished from Athea GAA club in Limerick.

It is believed that club officials discovered there were discrepancies and that monies could not be accounted for. They then contacted the gardai.

Investigations into the affair are continuing and a trawl of the club's financial affairs is at the centre of the probe.

It is believed that investigations are being focused on monies which the club had been taking in over recent years.

The garda investigation is going back several years.

An Athea GAA club spokesman said they would not be making any statement while the investigation proceeds.
