Gardai have arrested three men and uncovered what is believed to be a bomb after stopping a number of vehicles close to the border in county Louth.

It is believed that the device was in the process of being transported across the border and was destined to be used in an attack in Northern Ireland possibly on the security forces.

The operation by armed gardai took place near Kilcurry, Dundalk earlier this evening.

Gardai believe they  have foiled a major incident being planned by dissident Republicans.
