Gardaí have urged motorists against "dangerous and illegal" spikes being added to wheels which put cyclists at risk.

In a post on their Facebook page gardaí urged "all road users in particular haulage companies and truck drivers" to avoid the modification due to the risk to cyclists and pedestrians.

The statement reminded road users that the modifications are illegal because vehicles should not have "any inessential object in a position where it is likely to strike any person involved in a collision with the vehicle".

They also included an image of a truck they encountered in Dublin recently.

"Whilst the driver thought ‘it looks cool’ this poses a serious risk to cyclists, pedestrians and all other road users. The driver of the truck was required to remove theses before continuing," the statement said.

"Anyone who encounters a modified truck should report the incident to Gardaí."
