Garda thrown from horse at football match

Gardai confront Linfield supporters at Tallaght Stadium.

A MEMBER of the Garda Mounted Support Unit has been treated for minor injuries after he was thrown from his horse at a football match, writes Allison Bray.

The garda was on patrol at the Setanta Sports Cup quarter-final between Shamrock Rovers and Linfield at Tallaght Stadium in Dublin last night, when the horse was spooked and threw the officer from his mount. The garda was taken to nearby Tallaght Hospital as a precaution. However, his injuries are not believed to be serious.

Two fans were arrested at the match for anti-social behaviour. The two incidents were not related.

It was the first meeting between Rovers and Linfield since a 1984 European Cup tie. A large contingent of Linfield fans travelled from Belfast for the event, but despite the two arrests the event passed off peacefully.
