A CENTURY-old garda station had to be closed for two hours today after raw sewage poured into the reception area.

Sligo Garda Station, on Pearse Road in the town, had to be evacuated during the incident.

It's understood pipes leading to an upstairs toilet burst, sending the sewage flooding down through a ceiling.

Gardaí serving at the station have described conditions there as 'intolerable'.

A notice telling members of the public the station was temporarily closed was attached to the front door of the barracks while the clean-up continued inside.

The station has become so dilapidated, the Government announced last October plans for a new station for the town which serves as a headquarters for the Sligo/Leitrim Division.

The proposed new building will be built under a public-private partnership arrangement.

However it could be 2021 before a new building is opened.
