Garda shot dead by armed thugs during botched cash robbery

A GARDA detective has been been shot dead in an attempted robbery by armed men in Dundalk tonight.

The officer in his 40s was among colleagues who were escorting a cash delivery to a credit union in the Co Louth town.

The area has been sealed off and gardaí have appealed for witnesses over the incident outside the Lordship Credit Union at Bellurgan, Jenkinstown, about 9.30pm.

It is understood the detective from Dundalk garda station was critically injured after several shots were fired during the incident and died soon after. He is believed to one of two detectives on escort duty caught up in the attempted robbery.

Gardai say a dark-coloured Volkswagen Passat containing up to four people left the scene in the direction of Dundalk.
