Justice Minister Alan Shatter has announced 18 senior promotions within the Garda.
The new roles include four chief superintendents and 14 superintendents.
The appointments were revealed as the Garda Representative Association (GRA) met at its annual conference, in Westport, Co Mayo.
Mr Shatter was not invited to this year's gathering, which is usually addressed by the Justice Minister of the day.
The promotions were agreed at a meeting of the Cabinet and sanctioned by Public Spending Minister Brendan Howlin.
"The agreement that has been reached will enable the strength of the senior and supervisory ranks to be maintained at these new levels, so that any further vacancies within those levels will be promptly filled," said Mr Shatter.
"This will contribute significantly towards the maintenance of the operational capacity and effectiveness of the Garda Siochana."
Last month, it was announced 82 new sergeant and 34 inspector positions were being opened for promotions.
