Garda Denis Dunbar, who was serving at Blackwater garda station in Co Wexford, told Ms Justice Mary Irvine in the High Court that he was unrecognisable as a result of head and facial injuries he received after having been knocked unconscious.
He had been left with a permanent scar.
He said he and a number of colleagues had been called to a street disturbance outside the Blackwater Lodge Hotel after 2am on August 6, 2007.
Gda Dunbar, at a garda compensation hearing, said he had been punched and kicked and dragged for up to 100 metres along the street.
He had been told afterwards by colleagues that he had been hit on the head with a motorcycle helmet and knocked out.
The court heard he had withdrawn from social activities for some time because of scarring.
The judge awarded Gda Dunbar €32,820 in general and special damages.
