Five puppies were rescued from Dublin Port on Monday evening after Gardaí found them hidden in a cardboard box in the back of a van.

The puppies, who are no older than six weeks old, were all suffering from a severe worm infestation and dehydration.

Gardaí removed them from the vehicle which was attempting to board the ferry.

The dogs appear to be a terrier-type cross breed and are now in the care of the DSPCA Veterinary Team.

A statement from DSPCA said: "This is just another case of illegal smuggling of underage puppies, and the obvious disregard for the animal’s health and welfare is of great concern to the DSPCA."
