Garda punched and eye-gouged during domestic call before colleague pepper sprayed attacker
A Garda was punched in the face and eye-gouged during a domestic call early on Sunday morning.
The officer avoided serious injury when his female colleague came to his aid and pepper-sprayed the attacker.
Independent.ie has learned that the brave officers declined medical assistance at the scene before going on to finish their shifts and even worked overtime.
A source said: "The Gardaí were asked to attend the scene of a domestic incident.
"When they arrived a male occupant resisted arrest and attacked the male Garda. He punched the officer in the face and eye-gouged him.
"Luckily the female Garda came to his aid and pepper-sprayed the suspect."
A Garda spokesmans said the officers attended the scene of a dispute at Coultry Terrace, Ballymun at approximately 6.30am this morning.
"A male in his 20s arrested under the Public Order Act at the scene following a struggle with Gardaí. He was conveyed to Ballymun Garda Station and is expected to appear before Dublin District Court (CCJ)."
This is the latest in a spate of recent assaults on Gardaí.
Last Sunday two Gardaí were hospitalised after they were attacked in Claremorris, Co Mayo.
And in the early hours of last Monday a garda sergeant received injuries to his face and a female garda's wrist was broken after the two officers had approached a number of men in Finglas, North Dublin.
