Garda probe as man is attacked in his home

GARDAI are investigating an attack on a man in his home.

In the latest violent assault on a homeowner, the man aged in his 50s was confronted by two masked men when he answered a knock at his front door.

The robbers, one of whom is reported to have had a handgun, threatened the man and demanded money before punching and kicking him.

The incident happened on the Clodagh Road in the Avondale area of Waterford city at around 7.30pm on Thursday.

The attackers fled the scene without any money and the man was able to raise the alarm.

Gardai in Waterford have asked anyone with information to contact them on 051 305300.

The attempted robbery follows a number of attacks on people in their own home in recent days, including that on Greta Lilly (96) from Buncrana, Co Donegal, and on Fr Christy McCormack, parish priest of Fohenagh, Co Galway.
