Five fire brigades from Wicklow town, Greystones and Rathdrum fought the fire at what was once the Cullenmore Hotel, near Ashford village.

Situated on the old N11, the hotel was closed down before work began on the dual-carriageway stretch of the M11 from Newtownmountkennedy to Rathnew. It had fallen into a dilapidated state in recent years.

Superintendent Pat Ward confirmed there was a suspicion the fire might have been started deliberately. He said gardai would be carrying out a forensic examination.

Firefighters tackled the fire for several hours after it started at 1am on Wednesday, but the premises was destroyed.

Supt Ward appealed to people who may have passed by the hotel on Tuesday night and into the early hours of Wednesday to contact gardai at 0404-60140 if they saw anything suspicious.
