Garda Ombudsman probe death of man who entered river after being stopped at garda traffic checkpoint

The Garda Ombudsman is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who entered a river and drowned shortly after he was stopped at a garda traffic checkpoint.

It’s understood the man was stopped at a traffic checkpoint in Galway city last night.

When approached by gardai, the man got out of his vehicle and left the scene.

Emergency services were notified shorly afterwards that the man was seen entering the nearby River Corrib at O’Brien’s Bridge.

His body was subsequently removed from the river a short time later.
