Gardaí in Waterford have launched a murder probe after a body was found with head wounds on Wednesday morning.

The deceased, 48-year-old Abdi Rasheed Kaaheen Shire, was discovered at an apartment in the Wellington Square complex, Wellington Street, at about 9.20am.

No arrests have yet been made in relation to the murder.

Gardaí are not releasing details of a post-mortem, carried out at University Hospital Waterford by Professor Marie Cassidy, for operational reasons.

A Somali national, Mr Kaheen Shire had been living in the Waterford city area.

Residents of the block on Wellington Street close to Ballybricken Green expressed shock at the death of the man.

Gardaí are appealing particularly to members of the local Somali community who may be in a position to assist them with their inquiries.
