Garda 'dissident informer' is woman
THE Garda suspected of passing information to a dissident Republican sympathiser has served in at least two garda divisions, the Sunday Independent has learned.
Sources have also confirmed that the garda is a woman, and as soon as concerns were raised about her alleged activity that action was taken.
"There was an immediate feeling of revulsion and betrayal among her colleagues," said one source.
"Anger and disbelief," is how another garda described the reaction to the allegations.
The former garda, who resigned from the force, has not yet been interviewed or arrested by gardai and has not been charged with any offences in relation to these allegations.
"There is nothing officially linking her to the allegations," said another source.
Garda sources confirmed that they have been aware of the allegations for some time and concerns reportedly expressed by MI5 were the not the first time that senior gardai knew of the matter.
The nature of the association between the woman and the alleged paramilitary will form part of the garda investigation.
A garda spokesperson said, "An Garda Siochana is currently investigating the matter. As requested An Garda Siochana will provide a full report on the matter to the Minister for Justice and, as the investigation is ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage."
The information allegedly passed on related to the identity of men who were arrested after gardai struck a significant blow to the activities of dissident Republicans.
