Garda burglary blitz sees 2,300 face charges

More than 2,300 people have now been charged as a result of the garda crackdown on burglaries nationwide.

The latest figures were disclosed by Justice Minister Alan Shatter, who applauded Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan and his force for their targeted approach in reducing burglaries.

Mr Shatter made his comments after the Irish Independent revealed that there had been a drop of over 10pc in the number of burglaries in Dublin since the crackdown began almost a year ago.

The latest figures show there were 4,226 people arrested and 2,327 charged, up to the end of last week.

Mr Shatter said last night the success of Operation Fiacla was undoubted evidence that "smart policing" was very effective.
