Five young men have been arrested after two burglaries

Five men have been arrested overnight in an organised operation as part of the nationwide garda anti-burglary initiative, Operation Fiacla.

Gardaí from National Support Services patrolling became aware of two burglaries which had occurred in Drumshambo, Co. Leitrim at around 9.30pm.

A navy coloured VW Golf was seen in the vicinity of the burglaries and details of it were relayed to garda units who then took up positions on the N4 close to Longford and monitored all the eastbound traffic.

Eastern Region Regional Support Units were also monitoring the M4 motorway and at approximately 11.20pm they spotted a navy coloured VW Golf travelling eastbound between Mullinger and Enfield.

This was stopped on the M4 at Johnstown.

During a search of the car Gardaí discovered cash as well as other items.

The five males, three in their teens, one 20s and one 30 male were arrested at the scene and taken to Carrick on Shannon, Ballymote and Sligo Garda Stations where they are detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
