A spokesman said the lone raider arrived at the service station in Brooklodge, Glanmire, County Cork at 7.15pm.

The man entered the premises brandishing a firearm.

In a statement released this evening a spokesman said: “He gained access behind the shop counter and demanded a staff member to put money from the cash registers into a bag which he provided.”

Gardai said the culprit exited the shop and fled the scene in the wine-coloured Fiat Punto, partial registration number 98D, in the direction of Knockraha.

The car was found abandoned in Templenacarriga, Midleton, County Cork and was seized for technical examination.

The culprit is described as being male, approximately 6' in height and of athletic build. He was wearing a hooded top that is light grey on top and black on the bottom, black tracksuit bottoms and dark coloured footwear.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information, particularly those who may have observed the wine coloured Fiat Punto prior to its arrival at Brooklodge or subsequent discovery at Templenacarriga to contact them at Mayfield Garda Station on 021 4558510, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
