Game tinged with sadness for players

Grainne Cunningham

THE nephew of one of the men killed in a boating accident earlier this month captained his team to a senior county championship yesterday.

And two of the dead man's sons played on the losing team in a match tinged with sadness. The double loss of former GAA All-Star Ger Feeney and his friend Donal McEllin in a boating accident off Inishbofin Island weighed heavily on the minds of those who attended the Mayo football final between Castlebar Mitchels and Ballintubber yesterday.

Both had been looking forward to the final and Mr Feeney, who was a native of Ballintubber but lived in Castlebar, even had a special jersey mixing both teams' colours, which he was to wear at the game.

His sons, Richie and Alan (captain) and Donal McEllin's nephew Tom Cunniffe all played for Castlebar yesterday. And Mr Feeney's nephew, John Feeney, captained Ballintubber.

In the end, the rural team of Ballintubber won by three points, 0-8 to 0-5.

Amongst the large crowd were Mr Feeney's widow, Kathleen, their other son, Dara, and daughter, Claire.
