Funeral takes place thanks to locals

Locals in a snow-bound village have come together to enable the funeral of their oldest resident to take place, writes Mark Kennedy.

The remains of 102-year-old Jenny Byrne, from Newtown Coolgreany, Co Wexford, had been in a funeral home in Gorey following her death last week as Coolgreany was inaccessible due to the snow.

But in an example of community spirit, local contractor Noel O'Toole from Forchester, Inch, used his digger to grit roads into Coolgreany so the hearse could make its way to Johnstown Church on Monday with Mrs Byrne's remains, and again yesterday for the burial at Ballyfad. Other local people gritted footpaths and the area outside their houses.

Mrs Byrne is survived by one daughter Maura and four sons: Thompson, Cyril, Aidan and Peter.
