Funeral service for Obamas’ Dalkey chef Paul to take place tonight
POPULAR: Paul Finnegan cooked for US First Lady Michelle Obama last summer
A funeral service for the late Dublin chef who cooked for Michelle Obama and her daughters last year will take place tonight.
Paul Finnegan, the chef from Finnegan’s Pub in Dalkey, passed away peacefully at St Vincent’s Hospital on Wednesday.
The father-of-two (48) was the son of the pub’s owners Colleen and Dan Finnegan
Paul made headlines last year when he served up a meal to the US First Lady and her girls Malia and Sasha.
Asked afterwards what they had dined on, Paul modestly said: “It was nothing exotic – just fish and chips.”
“Actually, one of the girls had cottage pie. I think I’m going to have to change it to Obama pie.”
As well as feeding the First Lady and her children, Paul also cooked for many famous people from all over the world.
On top of that, he prepared dishes for locals such as Maeve Binchy, and actor Timothy Dalton, who is currently living nearby, film director Neil Jordan, author Salman Rushdie and stars Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise and Pamela Anderson, as well as all the members of U2.
Mr Finnegan is survived by his wife Ana, children Sean and Isobel, his parents, and his siblings Donal, Neil, Peter, Alan, Michelle and Cathy-Anne.
Local people immediately took to social media to pay tribute to the popular chef, a well-known figure in the community.
The Dalkey Business Group wrote: “Dalkey lost one of our most beloved men in the town today, Paul Finnegan of Finnegan’s Dalkey.
“An absolute gent whom we'll miss so much, things somehow won't be the same without him. Our condolences to Ana and the family.”
Paul suddenly took ill at his home earlier this week. His death has shocked his family and friends and residents of Dalkey.
His removal takes place tonight from Quinn’s of Glasthule to the Church of the Assumption in Dalkey, arriving at 6pm.
The funeral will be held tomorrow after 10am mass, going to Deans Grange Cemetery.
Finnegan’s pub will be closed today and tomorrow.
