Fugitive caught during off-licence raid
A serial criminal, wanted in Britain after absconding while on a release programme, was in garda custody last night after being caught red-handed during an attempted robbery.
Officers detained the 46-year suspect and a 24-year-old accomplice after they attacked the owner of an off-licence on the northside of Dublin and struck him with a hammer.
Three men, masked in balaclavas, rushed into Bracken's off licence at Botanic Road in Glasnevin around 9pm on Monday and locked the door.
The owner, who is in his sixties, was threatened by the gang but managed to raise the alarm by pressing a panic button.
A garda patrol was quickly on the scene and they forced the front door and confronted two of the suspects.
One of the raiders attempted to hit a garda with a hammer, and the shop owner was assaulted and sustained minor injuries, which necessitated hospital treatment.
The two men jumped out through a rear exit, but were arrested outside by garda reinforcements, who had been summoned by their colleagues.
Last night gardai at Mountjoy said they were looking for a third man in connection with the attempted raid.
