'Frog' Ward's son charged with stealing

THE son of Traveller John 'Frog' Ward - shot dead by Mayo farmer Padraig Nally two years ago - has been charged with stealing a woman's handbag in a supermarket.

Father-of-one John Ward Jnr, with addresses at Carrowbrowne Halting Site, and Longford, is currently serving an eleven-month sentence handed down in March for a spate of motoring and theft and fraud offences.

Garda Kieran Quinn gave evidence at Galway District Court of charging Ward with stealing the handbag, with €240 worth of cash and cosmetics from a customer at Clarke's Supervalu supermarket, in Barna, on January 13 last.

Judge Mary Fahy remanded Ward in custody to appear before Harristown District Court in Castlerea today.

Ward will also be appearing before Galway Circuit Criminal Court next week in relation to a serious assault charge.

He pleaded guilty before that court in May to assaulting Eddie Corcoran, causing him harm at 16 The Meadows, Ballybrit, Galway, on March 18 last year.

A medical report handed into court at the time stated that the victim had received three stab wounds in the attack.

Judge Raymond Groarke deferred sentencing to next week.

This was to allow for the preparation of probation and victim impact reports.
