HUNDREDS of homes were without power last night after freak weather uprooted trees and damaged power lines in east Galway and west Offaly.
ESB crews worked into the night to restore power in the Clonfert area of Galway and nearby Banagher in Offaly after a tornado-like black cloud uprooted trees and caused structural damage to buildings. An ESB spokesperson said an estimated 700 homes were without power. "People are reminded not to approach fallen power lines if they see them but to contact ESB networks." Locals said the black cloud descended about 6.30pm.
DIY KEY TO LONG LIFE
MIDDLE-AGED men could add years to their lives simply by taking up DIY. Researchers have found evidence that performing a few do-it-yourself tasks around the house is the secret to a longer and healthier life.
Scientists discovered that men aged between 50 and 64, who were active around their homes, had a 23pc lower risk of death from all causes than those who had a couch potato lifestyle. The long-term study looked at nearly 60,000 middle-aged men and women to assess how physical activity affected lifespan.
FORMER TD DIES
FORMER Mayo Fianna Fail TD and senator Martin Joe O'Toole has died at the age of 88. Mr O'Toole was a member of Mayo County Council for 44 years.
He was a senator on the Agricultural Panel from 1977 to 1989 and served a TD for the former West Mayo constituency between 1989 and 1992.
&EURO;8,000 FOR FAMILY
A SUM of €8,000 has been raised for the children of murdered mum Patricia Kierans so they can return to Australia. The mother of four was killed on September 5 in Bailieborough, Co Cavan.
Her husband Oliver (56), of Drumbannon estate in the town, has been charged with her murder. Three of the Belfast native's four grown children – Oliver Jr, Julie and Gerard – live in Australia. The couple's fourth son, Shane, was on his way to Australia on the day of her killing.
A 50-year-old man has been remanded in custody at Dundalk District Court after being charged with the murder of a man whose body was discovered on a beach.
The body of Audrius Butkus (44) was found at Mornington, Co Meath, on September 10. Marius Gaizutis, of Marsh Road, Drogheda, was remanded to appear at Cloverhill District Court next Tuesday.
