A four year old child died and her five year old sister was injured after the family vehicle crashed after spinning out of control.

The accident happened shortly before 7pm at Grenagh off the Mallow Road in Cork.

The two sisters were travelling with their mother and father in a Ford van when it apparently skidded out of control and collided with a ditch.

The four year old girl suffered critical head and neck injuries.

She died before she could be rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

Her five year old sister was also injured in the accident and was rushed to CUH.

However, her injuries are not understood to be life threatening.

Both parents avoided serious injury but were treated at the scene for shock.

They were being comforted at CUH last night by family and friends.

Gardai closed the road to conduct a detailed examination.

No other vehicle was involved and gardai said they are treating the matter as a tragic accident.
