Joseph Daly (33) of Sycamore Drive, Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow, was wearing a blue ski mask over his face and carrying a claw hammer when robbing Roundwood pharmacy on October 9, 2010.

Judge Michael O'Shea said he accepted that the defendant did not threaten anyone on the occasion, but he added that the robbery had been carried out in a frightening and intimidating manner.

Jonathan Harty, the owner of the pharmacy, said he had been put in fear. Asked by the gardai why he had done it, Daly told them that he was strung out on drugs at the time.

His barrister told Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court that Daly's life was chaotic for a long number of years and he had spend most of his adult life in custody.
