Four people were taken to hospital after a two-car road crash this afternoon.

Gardai are investigating the crash which occurred near Corrandulla, Co. Galway on the N84, Galway to Headford Road.

Two women - the driver of one car, and the back seat passenger of the second car - are in a serious condition.

A 30-year-old woman was the sole occupant of one car and she is understood to be the most badly injured.  The other seriously injured woman is believed to be in her 50s.

The two other occupants of the second car have injuries described as being non-life threatening.

The stretch of road was closed for a time but has since reopened.

Local area councillor James Chairty said the section of the road where the collision occurred is “prone to accidents”.

“The council are doing a lot of upgrades to the road at the moment,” the Renua representative said.

“I am thinking of all those involved. The last thing anybody wants to hear about is an accident.”

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to contact Galway Garda Station at Mill Street on 091 538000, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
