MANY former staff members of Mount Carmel hospital would willingly "walk back in" to their old jobs if a move to re-open the facility was successful.
An Irish medical group, RAS Medical – which owns Park West Clinic, Auralia Medical and the Limerick Laser Centre – is to meet with NAMA to discuss purchasing the facility.
The move came after they were approached by a patients' advocacy group who asked if they might consider buying the former private hospital with a view to re-opening it.
Stephen McMahon, of the Irish Patients' Association, revealed his group had made contact with RAS Medical, since they already owned the Park West clinic, explaining: "We made the initial contact because we knew they run a highly accredited facility in Park West and knew they are always on the lookout for other facilities."
In a letter to the liquidator, forwarded to Nama, Mr McMahon wrote: "Following discussions over the past eight days," he had encouraged the group to reapply to the agency with an offer to purchase the facility.
Liquidators were appointed to the Mount Carmel hospital by the High Court on January 24 and more than 300 staff were made redundant.
