Former rugby referee to officiate at Jonny Sexton's wedding

Q THE priest who will marry Jonathan Sexton and Laura Priestley is a former rugby referee.

Fr Paul Lavelle, of Kilbarrack-Foxfield in Co Dublin, is a family friend of the Sextons.

Previously living in Rathgar, Fr Lavelle refereed several Leinster Schools Senior Cup matches in the 1970s and 1980s, with Sexton's father Jerry and his uncle Willie among the players at the time.

"They are a lovely, good family. I've known them a long time and it's an honour and privilege to be part of their special day," Fr Lavelle told the Irish Independent.

Fr Lavelle drove down to Adare, Co Limerick, yesterday afternoon and spent last night with the wedding party at Adare Manor.

Meanwhile, the Holy Trinity Abbey church, where the ceremony will take place, was closed off to the public last night and decorated with large bouquets of flowers early this morning.

It is believed the bride will walk down the aisle to the instrumental classical piece, Pachelbel's 'Canon'.
