Former boxer critical after savage attack

A FORMER boxer, who represented Ireland in the 80s, was left fighting for his life in hospital yesterday after a savage assault at his home, writes Fiona Donnelly.

Aidan Roche, who celebrated his 40th birthday last week, was rushed to Cork University Hospital on Saturday evening with serious head injuries. Emergency services arrived at his home at Rathcarrig in Fermoy at around 8.30pm and he was rushed to hospital.

He was placed in a medically induced coma and remained in a critical but stable condition yesterday.

Gardai have launched an investigation into the assault.

A man and a woman, aged in their mid-20s, were arrested at the scene and taken to Fermoy garda station. They were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Mr Roche is from a large family in the Fermoy area. He has been renting a house in Rathcarrig and is known to gardai.

As a teenager, Mr Roche won five junior boxing titles.
