POLICE on both sides of the Border are hunting a gang of counterfeit note forgers after several were tendered over the Christmas period in both the North and the Republic.
Detectives believe most of the forgeries were in £50 sterling notes and were passed in hotels, pubs and other entertainment venues.
They believe the fake notes may have been produced in Britain and brought into the Republic prior to Christmas.
Several stores in Newry were hit by the forgers and other fake notes were tendered in the Republic's border towns.
Meanwhile, the PSNI has revealed that two men were arrested at Dundalk Road, Newry last week in connection with the alleged possession of dud notes. A file is being prepared in relation to this.
