Footballer avoids jail for assault

A FOOTBALLER, who fractured the nose of an opponent with a punch in a match, received a suspended jail sentence for assault at Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court.

Ballinacor captain Christopher Kennedy (26), Clonerkin, Greenane, Ballinaclash, Rathdrum, pleaded guilty to assaulting Ronan Keddy of Kilcoole, causing harm in a Division 2 league match at Ballinacor in May 2010.

Sgt Mary Burbage said that with 10 minutes to go, Mr Keddy went on a solo run before passing the ball. He stopped to catch his breath, was nudged in the back, looked around and got a punch in the nose.He sustained fractured bones in his nose and a chipped front tooth.

Judge Michael O'Shea yesterday suspended the 18-month jail sentence on Kennedy entering a bond of €200 to be of good behaviour for two years.
