Flippin' great solo run

THE loneliness of the long-distance runner was rewarded yesterday when a single competitor in a cross-country race was awarded with a gold medal.

Niall Leamy, of St Cronan's AC in Co Clare, was the only runner in the 5,000 metres at the U19 Woodie's DIY Juvenile 'B' Cross- Country Championship race in Boyle, Co Roscommon. He is pictured by Sportsfile flipping for joy as he crossed the finish line.

Frank Greally of Athletics Ireland said the bad weather must have kept people at home.

"In fairness to him, Niall was willing, so he was allowed to start and complete his course," said Mr Greally.
