Five hillwalkers rescued from Army ranges

FIVE hillwalkers were rescued from the Army ranges at the Glen of Imaal by using their smartphone when they strayed into the impact zone, which is regularly hit by artillery, mortar and tank fire.

The area in Co Wicklow is strewn with unexploded shells.

The gardai asked for help yesterday from the Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team and the Glen of Imaal Irish Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team for the group of hillwalkers.

The group of three men and two women became disorientated and wrongly descended towards the Glen of Imaal .

A mountain rescue spokes- man said that, although a little embarrassed, none of the group of five was injured.
