Ed Carty

FIVE men have been arrested over a spate of arson attacks on holiday homes, farms and vehicles in Donegal this summer.

The suspects, aged from 17 to 24, were detained following 11 fires in the Inishowen area.

Gardai said they have been investigating a series of fires in a 10-mile radius around Buncrana, describing them as random and many occurring in isolated areas.

Properties targeted included unoccupied buildings, holiday homes, empty houses, farm sheds, vehicles, a school and a health centre.

The arson damage is estimated to have cost more than 100,000 euro.

The latest fire happened in the Hilltown area of Buncrana in the early hours of yesterday morning and destroyed a car and tractor in a farm shed.

The five arrests were made over the last two days. Three suspects were taken for questioning to Buncrana Garda station and the other two to Letterkenny.

One was detained under section 30 of the Offences against the State Act and the other four under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.

A 17-year-old boy was released from custody in Buncrana last night.
