COMMUTERS were left 'reeling' when they came across an oily patch on a busy road.

Drivers and passers-by were surprised to see hundreds of fish spilled across a road in Waterford earlier today.

The incident occurred at a roundabout on the Dunmore Road, on the outskirts of the city, shortly after 11am this morning.

Waterford City Council was contacted and carried out a swift clean-up with the assistance of the fire services.

The incident has been described as minor by a spokesperson for the local authorities.

“It wasn’t a major incident.  It was a fishy story- pardon the pun.

“It was probably a lorry that had a bit too much fish, and probably a few fish on top of it slid off, and onto the road.

“It was cleaned up- the road could have been oily,” the spokesperson said.

Passers-by took to social media sites, to express their disbelief at the incident and said they thought someone was “codding”, and that “this scampi true”.

Nobody was injured in the incident, and it caused no traffic disruptions.
