First-time flyer gets a bite of Big Apple
A 69-YEAR-OLD who has never been on a plane before has taken a bite out of the Big Apple after his wife won an all-expenses-paid trip to New York.
Francis and Ann Kennedy, from Nenagh, Co Tipperary, were amongst 39 who won the holiday on the National Lottery's 'Big Money Game'.
But the couple -- who have been married for 48 years -- had to rush to apply for Francis's first ever passport after Ann's name was announced in the final prize draw a month ago.
While Ann (69) has gone abroad on a number of trips, she said he has no excuse not to holiday abroad next year.
"And it will definitely be somewhere hot, like the Canaries," she said.
The couple visited a number of New York's famous sites during the six-day trip -- but they also shopped for their 11 grandchildren with the €2,500 each of the winners were given.
"Now that I've been away there's no stopping me now," said Francis, adding that he found the experience of flying "grand".
Among the other winners was Surendra Palanee (38) and his wife Syndy (29). Originally from Mauritius, they have been living in Ireland for six years.
Less than 24 hours after hearing in June that they had won the trip, Syndy discovered she was pregnant with their second child.
"It was two big shocks at the one time," joked Surendra.
The show's hosts Brian Ormond and Sinead Kennedy accompanied the guests.
