Fire-hit firms reopen

Businesses next to a Chinese restaurant gutted by a blaze are reopening.

Wongs on Sandford Road in Ranelagh was badly damaged when a fire broke out in the offices above the restaurant on Tuesday evening and firemen battled the blaze for hours.

The adjacent McSorleys pub escaped serious harm and reopened after a major clean-up effort. The Wild Goose Grill, which is also next to Wongs, will open again today.

Cancer rate warning

THE lung cancer level among Irish women is the sixth highest in Europe, according to the Irish Cancer Society.

The data was released as it launched a lung cancer awareness campaign, urging people to be aware of the signs and symptoms and to contact their GP or call the National Cancer Helpline (Freefone 1800 200 700) if they are concerned.

Car sales hit bump

CAR dealers enjoyed a late surge in sales last month, but they were still 12pc down in the year.

New figures from the Central Statistics Office show 76,256 new private cars were licensed during 2012, which was over 10,000 less than in 2011. December sales were up 30pc on a year earlier.
