FIREFIGHTERS last night tackled a blaze at a Co. Kildare hotel.
Smoke billowed from the Westgrove Hotel in Clane and more than 60 guests were evacuated including early arrivals for a function for the local soccer club where pundit John Giles was scheduled to guest.
Fire trucks augmented by mobile water tankers, an ambulance and local gardai rushed to the scene.
A local source expressed concern because the hotel is near a major gas line.
Gardai have confirmed that the fire started in a store room area of a car park at the hotel. Emergency services evacuated the hotel, the nearby West Grove shopping centre and apartments for safety reasons. However there were no injuries.
“There is chaos. When we arrived the fire alarm was already going off but nobody seemed to be evacuating the building,” said photo-journalist Eleanor Keegan.
“We decided to leave then all of a sudden people started taking it seriously and started to come out quickly, but there were still a lot of people milling around the entrance."
