Three fire crews have arrived to tackle the blaze near Balscadden, reported to have started less than an hour ago near the Hollywood Lakes golf club.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, said a spokesperson for the  Dublin Fire Brigade.

“The units have just arrived and are bringing the fire under control, and we are monitoring the situation,” he added.

No one was in the area where the fire started, though a nearby car park was evacuated as a precaution.

Gardai were called in to help control the blaze.

Gorse fires tend to be more prevalent during prolonged dry spells.

On Twitter, Dublin Fire Brigade wrote “#Howth Balscadden. We've 2 units and a district officer on scene at present for a gorse fire."
