Gardaí are setting up a national firearms command to oversee the activities of the special units tasked with confronting organised crime, terrorism and other incidents involving guns.

An announcement on the strategic and tactical operations command unit is expected to come today from Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan.

It will be responsible for co-ordinating the deployment of Garda units carrying firearms, such as the Emergency Response Unit and the Armed Support Unit.

The Special Detective Unit, or Special Branch, will continue to focus on countering international and domestic terrorism as well as its investigative duties.

Similar command units operate within London's metropolitan police service.
