A RECORD 2,000 photographs will be sifted through by judges over the coming weeks to decide who captured the best photojournalism in Ireland last year.

The judges gathered in Dublin yesterday to begin deliberations after photographers from around the country entered their work from 2009.

The winners of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland AIB Photojournalism Awards 2009 will be announced on February 5. Images were submitted by 130 photographers from around the country.

This year's judges are David Sleator of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland; Brenda Moriarty of AIB; Bride Rosney, chairman of the judging panel; Per Folkfer, former editor in chief of Danish Daily 'Politiken'; and Seamus Murphy, a photographer whose accolades include six World Press Photo Awards.

The winners of the competition, which showcases excellence among Irish photographers, will be announced at a ceremony in the Burlington Hotel.

The Irish Independent's Steve Humphreys was named AIB Photojournalist of the Year for 2008 last year.
