FIAT is warning the Irish owners of early model Punto cars that salt spread during the big freeze could damage their brakes and cause safety problems.
The car manufacturer has sent a vehicle safety recall notice to owners of early Fiat Punto cars after it obtained their details from the Department of Transport.
Owners who have sold on their cars are urged to contact the Department of Transport at 1890 411 412 to update the records.
A Fiat spokesman said the recall affected Puntos manufactured between 1993 and 1999, but admitted it was not possible to say how many vehicles were involved.
He insisted the brakes would be automatically inspected during NCT tests or routine services by Fiat dealers.
Fiat is offering to carry out inspections on the affected cars free of charge.
