Negotiator Michael McGrath said he would like to see a "debate as early as tomorrow" on water charges if agreement cannot be reached tonight.

"We do believe now that it is untenable that Dáil Éireann would not debate the issue of Irish Water," he said

"We cannot deny deputies that right indefinitely."

He added it was his party's preference to reach agreement tonight.

Mr McGrath said the Dáil may have to decide on the Irish Water issue after a newly elected Government is formed.

"If we cannot reach agreement then we will have to consider whether we will facilitate a minority government led by Fine Gael with the support of Independents."

"If that was the case it would mean that Dáil Éireann would be the final arbitrator."

Mr McGrath added that negotions were "in the end game now."
