Fianna Fail digging in over Dail motion on cutbacks

FIANNA Fail is going ahead with its Dail motion on garda cuts, despite pressure to postpone it following the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe.

The motion – which focuses on the closure of 100 garda stations – will be discussed in the Dail this evening, with a vote taken tomorrow.

The Coalition asked that it be postponed because it would coincide with the removal and funeral of Det Gda Donohoe.

But the request, understood to have come from Chief Whip Paul Kehoe and Justice Minister Alan Shatter, has been rejected by FF leader Micheal Martin.

FF insisted postponing the debate wasn't an appropriate response to the murder.

It also said it had no direct approach from Mr Shatter, and the request came from the Chief Whip's Office. There will be statements in the Dail today from party leaders on the killing.

Dominated

However, it is understood the Government asked for the FF motion, tabled by justice spokesman Niall Collins, to be deferred because they feared the debate would be dominated by the killing.

Ministers have insisted there is no connection between cuts and Friday's outrage.

Mr Collins said his motion was submitted on Friday morning, and is focused on station closures and not the death of Det Gda Donohoe, although it would be an opportunity to pay tribute to him.

A party spokesman added that the motion was particularly relevant this week, when stations are due to close.

The motion also calls for the re-opening of the garda training college in Templemore and resuming of recruitment. It also "accepts with grave concern the disturbing rise in burglary levels across the country''.
